We’ve found the UK’s most expensive!
Well, we think it’s the most expensive – but we’d love to hear from you if you know of a pricier one.
It is called the Vispring Diamond Majesty Mattress & Divan Set and it currently sells in Large Emperor size for £95,046.00. That’s the price if you add on things like the zip-link and a fancier fabric on the divan. The basic model is £92,750.
It’s actually meant to be £115,940 but it was on offer when we checked!
The size is obviously a factor. A large Emperor mattress is 215cm x 215cm whilst a king size is 150cm x 200cm. However, even if you go for the single size it will cost £34,995.
What’s so special about the £95,000 bed?
The first thing is the brand. Vispring are top of the tree when it comes to pocket sprung mattresses. They invited the pocket sprung mattress and they are still making outstanding products. However, you can pick up a Vispring mattress from John Lewis for about £1500 in a double size.
All of Vispring’s mattresses come with a 30 year warranty, which is exceptionally good. You might not keep the mattress that long, but they want you to know that it is built to last.
This one has three layers of springs, whereas most Vispring mattresses have one layer. That gives a total of more than 4000 springs across the three layers.
There are then several layers of natural materials. Most of these can be found on several mattresses that will cost you less than £1000 (lambs wool, cotton, cashmere, bamboo) but they go into great detail about which particular breed of animal has been used.
My favourite section explains that the mattress contains Vicuña which ‘comes from a small member of the camel family that lives in the extremes of the high-altitude Altiplano regions of the Andes and is the national animal of Peru. A sustainable income source for Andean farmers and harvested in very limited quantities, they are sheared at most, 5 times per year. Insulating and ultra soft, vicuña fleece is hypoallergenic and finer than cashmere.‘
The base it also made from solid beech, and you can choose from four firmness levels and different materials.
Is it worth the price?
I think this is one of those situations where if you need to ask the price, you can’t afford it. It has a marginally better specification than Vispring’s £5000 mattresses, but the differences are modest.
It’s a bit like hi-fi equipment. If you upgrade from a £200 Hifi to a £2000 Hifi then you will notice a huge difference in quality. However, if you upgrade from a £2000 Hi-Fi to a £20,000 Hi-Fi then the improvements are much subtler. You might notice them if you played two copies of Blonde on Blonde side by side, but both of them will make a great noise.
