Newcomers to the mattress market maybe surprised to find that some double mattresses cost more than £5000 pounds. However, with a Vispring mattress you are getting some pretty fancy heritage and prestige.

But is it worth the price tag compared to other Vispring mattresses?

We were recently lucky enough to test out the Vispring Regal Superb mattress – here’s what we thought.

Firmness rating of the Vispring Regal Superb Pocket Sprung Mattress

If you go for a top brand such as Vispring, then you can often choose the firmness that you want. In some cases they will even split the mattress down the middle and make one side firmer than the other to avoid marital disputes. 

The version of the Regal Superb Mattress that we tested was the soft version but you can also get a medium version of the same mattress. 

I would give it a rating of 3 out of 10 for firmness, with one being very soft and one being very firm. Indeed, after lying in it for a while it did take me some effort to get out of the mattress! 

For me and my build, it was much too soft a mattress. Honestly, I could have predicted this but when you’re given an opportunity to try such an expensive mattress you tend to jump at the offer. 

I am 13 stone and about six foot tall, so I should really be looking at a Vispring mattress that is medium or firm. 

Lying on my side, it was slightly closer to what I would be looking for but it still was a bit soft for me. Whilst lying on my front or back it did not leave me in a good sleeping position that would be well supported. 

This is my certainly not a criticism of Vispring, but I would generally say that if you’re looking at a soft mattress you should be someone who was quite a lot lighter than me and also someone who sleeps on their side.

Strength at the edges on the Vispring Regal Superb Pocket Sprung Mattress

We always like to test out how strong a mattress feels at the edges. A good mattress will generally offer strength right to the edges, so that if you end up sitting on the bed or lying on the edge then you won’t fall off. This mattress managed to maintain a similar amount of strength and consistency towards the edges, which was impressive considering how soft it is.

Motion transfer on the Vispring Regal Superb Pocket Sprung Mattress

We also tested out how much wobble the mattress had when we moved around. This is particularly important if you are sharing a bed with someone else (perhaps this is essential if you’re paying out £5000!). We found minimal motion transfer, which again is impressive considering this is a softer mattress. My experience is that firmer mattresses and foam mattresses have less motion transfer than softer mattresses.

Handles on the Vispring Regal Superb Pocket Sprung Mattress

Next we had a good look at the handles on the Vispring Regal Superb Pocket Sprung Mattress. Our theory is that good quality mattresses come with robust handles that are going to last. Ideally you want ones that will last the full 30 year warranty that come with Vispring mattresses. This mattress is double-sided, so in theory you will be turning it over regularly for 30 years. It’s important to know that it won’t rip at what is often something of a weak point. 

The material and the stitching on the handles seemed remarkably robust to me so I would have no worries about it lasting and lasting until 2055.

Specification of the Vispring Regal Superb Pocket Sprung Mattress

You might expect a mattress that cost this much money to have a very complicated design and all sorts of fancy technology. In fact, Vispring take quite an old fashioned approach and just use high quality materials without too much messing around and silly terminology. The mattress uses pocket springs, which the company invented and was later adopted as the standard for most mattresses in the world. It has a slightly higher price than some Vispring mattresses as it uses a few more fancy materials and has a few more springs – but the design principles are the same. 

Honestly, I feel that the difference in comfort between the cheaper and more expensive Vispring mattresses that I’ve tried is quite modest. You will get the same Vispring quality regardless of which one you choose. 

A much more important factor is getting the right firmness level for you. To achieve this, it’s important that you try it out for yourself. 

Whilst this mattress wasn’t the right firmness for me I could tell that it was another very high quality product from Vispring.

Price of the Vispring Regal Superb Pocket Sprung Mattress

When we tested this mattress it was £5119 for a double size. A single model would cost you £3499 whilst king size is £5985. Super king is a whopping £7515.
