When we tested the Silentnight Blenheim Ultragel Mirapocket 2000 Pocket Sprung mattress it was being sold at £729 in the single size or £929 in a double size. The king size version was £1099 whilst the super king version was £1329. It is available from United Carpets and Beds.
This makes it a relatively expensive Silentnight mattress. We put the brand as mid-market. This isn’t their most expensive mattress, but it is also two or three times the price of its cheapest models.
We can’t find the exact mattress online, but this Silentnight Ultragel 2000 mattress from Mattressman has a similar design.

Firmness rating of the Silentnight Blenheim Ultragel Mirapocket 2000 Pocket Sprung Mattress
When we tried this mattress out we concluded that it has a rating of 6/10 for firmness with 1/10 being soft and 10/10 being very firm. It has a notable bounce to it compared to a lot of modern sprung mattresses.
Lying on my back, I found that it was ever so slightly too soft for my weight and build. It was in this position that I did my usual test of putting my hand underneath my spine (you’ll be shocked to hear that I call this the Spine Test). It was quite hard to get my hand underneath without wriggling, which is an indication that I have sunk in a bit too much to get the full support that I need.
However, when I lay on my side, I found that it was about right for my weight and build.
I am naturally a front sleeper and didn’t think it quite was firm enough for my needs. For context, I’ll explain that I weigh 13 stone and I’m 6 ft tall. If you are slightly lighter than me, then this mattress would probably be about right for you. Alternatively, if you weigh about the same as me but sleep on your side then I would also consider it.

Side compression and strength at the edges of the Silentnight Blenheim Ultragel Mirapocket 2000 Pocket Sprung Mattress
One of my favourite tests on a mattress is to see how it performs at the very edges. Of course, we spend most of our time sleeping in the middle of the mattress rather than at the edge, but it does give an indication of build quality. I have also experienced many nights of sleeping on the edge of a bed because one of the children has climbed into bed and gradually pushed me off!
Overall, I found that this Silentnight mattress was about average for its strength at the edges. I have found some Silentnight mattresses are slightly stronger and more consistent towards the edges than this one.
As I lay on my side, I did feel slightly unstable, although I was in a rather exaggerated position on the very edge of the bed. Sitting on the edge of the bed produced similar results (we call this the Custard Slice test, as some mattresses behave like you’ve just bitten into one!). The mattress compressed quite significantly and it did feel as though I was slipping slightly. This is not a deal-breaker and it is perfectly possible to sit on the mattress a little further back without sinking in.
It’s also worth mentioning that very firm mattresses tend to be stronger right to the edges compared to medium firmness mattress such as this one.

Motion transfer on the Silentnight Blenheim Ultragel Mirapocket 2000 Pocket Sprung Mattress (also known as the Wibble Wobble Test).
“And how does it rate for motion transfer?” I hear you cry
Well, perhaps you aren’t crying that. More likely you are asking what motion transfer is and I’m getting a little bit carried away.
Essentially this is a test to see how much sideways wobble a mattress has. We call it the Wibble Wobble Test.
This is a good practical test and it’s particularly important if you share a bed with someone who gets woken up easily. Test this for yourself by working as a duo with one person lying in the bed and another person sitting on the bed and getting in and out.
If you can feel a lot of movement then it has a poor motion transfer rating.
This Silentnight mattress is quite bouncy and springy compared to some we have tested but we felt that it performed slightly above average for motion transfer. We didn’t feel considerable movement and it felt quite robust overall.

A few words on construction and design
I’m going to drift into some quite tedious technical discussion here but bear with me.
This mattress is flat on top, which means it has a ‘quilted’ finish. Some other mattresses including many by Silentnight have a tufted finish, where buttons pull it all together to give it strength.
My general experience is that a tufted mattress has slightly less motion transfer than a quilted mattress. However, I’ve not seen any detailed academic studies into this, so this is only a hunch based on my own personal mattress testing experience.
Handles on the Silentnight Blenheim Ultragel Mirapocket 2000 Pocket Sprung Mattress
Let’s move on to the thrilling topic of handles. Some mattresses nowadays don’t seem to come with mattresses at all or come with quite flimsy handles that don’t look like they will cope with constant movement. We owned one mattress that ripped around the handles and I’ve never quite got over it.
This mattress has a good, strong set of handles with nice strong stitching. I like to think that this is an indication that the rest of the mattress has been well constructed and properly manufactured.
A little more detail on how the mattress is designed
This Silentnight Blenheim mattress has what is known as a Mirapocket construction, which essentially is Silentnight’s own version of pocket springs. This is superior, in my opinion, to the Miracoil range of Silentnight mattresses.
Again, this is quite tedious, but the basic difference is that pocket springs are made of lots of individual springs, whereas Miracoil is one long piece of metal that is shaped into lots of springs.
The great big topper uses man-made materials including a foam with a type of gel to try and keep you cool. Synthetic materials are generally cheaper than natural materials and don’t always have the same breathable and cooling qualities as things like wool and latex. We’ve found that these gel and foam mixtures do tend to work quite well at keeping you cool and also keep the price of the mattress a little lower than it would be if it was made from fully natural materials.

Final thoughts on the Silentnight Blenheim Ultragel Mirapocket 2000 Pocket Sprung Mattress
This is a considerable mattress that is very deep and may require you to ditch your old fitted sheets and replace them with deeper ones.
You are getting a lot of mattress for your money and the firmness rating is likely to be suitable for a lot of people. It was a mid-range performer on its strength towards the edges, but it excelled in other areas such as the strength of its handles.
