When we tested out this Silentnight Air Comfort Pocket Sprung Mattress, it was being sold at for £649 in the double size, with the king size costing £130 more and the superking size costing £310 more. The single size was £150 cheaper than the double. 

Firmness rating for different sleeping positions

I began by lying on my front, as I’m a natural front sleeper. I must say that I found it to be quite a comfortable mattress, lying on my front. It certainly has a soft feel thanks to a plushy top layer. 

I then moved on to my side and again found it to be comfortable and offering a good level of support, with the combination of the top layer and the pocket springs working well together. 

On my back, I found it to be somewhat too soft and when I tried to put my hand underneath my spine, I found it was quite an effort.

That is a sure sign that a mattress is pretty soft. If you find there is a gap underneath your spine, then you aren’t really getting the right level of support, whereas if you are sinking in a lot then your spine may not be in a particularly natural sleeping position.

Edge support on the Silentnight Air Comfort Pocket Sprung Mattress

When we sat on the edge of the Silentnight Air Comfort Pocket Sprung Mattress, we found that the strength was somewhat below average.

We sunk a fair amount and when we tested the mattress by lying on our side right at the edge we didn’t get quite the same level of support as we did towards the middle of the mattress.

This is perhaps not very surprising on a mattress that is more towards the mid-range or softer end of the market but the general feel I would say was slightly less robust than a mattress that might cost two or three times as much.

Motion transfer on the Silentnight Air Comfort Pocket Sprung Mattress

A good test that you can carry out on a mattress before you buy it, is to have one person lie on the mattress and keep still whilst another person lies on the mattress, whilst wriggling round and getting in and out.

In this instance, I would say that this mattress is a little less rigid than others and picks up movement somewhat more than some mattresses we have tested. It is certainly not a significant amount of movement but I would say that I have found some with lower motion transfer. Again, this can be affected by the firmness level being slightly softer than some models.

Design and specification of the Silentnight Air Comfort Pocket Sprung Mattress

This mattress comes from the UK’s biggest mattress brand and a company that we think a lot of.

It uses pocket springs, which is the method of making a mattress that most of us are used to. The alternatives are either to use foam or to use open coil springs. The former gives a mattress a slightly different feel that can work well for a lot of people whilst the latter is a cheaper alternative that I would stay away from if you can afford to. 

The design is single-sided, which is not a problem in itself but does tend to be a design associated with cheaper pocket sprung mattresses. This is an area of some contention as lots of modern mattresses that are very good quality are single sided. I remain slightly old-fashioned!

Overall then, we think this mattress offers a lot for the money. I wouldn’t put it up there on build quality with some of the top brands on the market (e.g Vispring, Hypnos) but for a mid market choice at a good price, you could certainly do a lot worse.
