When we tested out the Relyon Derwent Natural Pashmina 2400 Pocket Spring Mattress, it was being sold for £939 in the double size. King size was just £60 extra whilst a single size was £79. Super king was £1155 and it was being offered with a 10-year warranty.

Firmness rating for different sleeping positions with the Relyon Derwent Natural Pashmina 2400 Pocket Spring Mattress

When we tested out this mattress, we gave it a rating of 7 out of 10 for firmness, with 10 being firm and one being soft. There isn’t it definitive guide as to how to measure firmness so there is an element of subjectivity about it and I always encourage people to try out a mattress for themselves.

We then tested it out in various sleeping positions to see how it performed. I am 13 stone and about six foot tall, which should give you some indication – but nothing beats trying it for yourself.

The first test is one that we often carry out, which is to lie on our back and put our hand underneath our spine. This is a nice simple test that I would encourage you to do for yourself on a mattress. You will find that on softer mattresses your hand is very reluctant to go underneath your back whilst on very firm mattresses it is very easy to put your hand underneath.

Ideally you want something in the middle so your hand goes under but with not a huge amount of effort. You’ll get a feel for it after trying out a few in a showroom!

For me, this mattress was about right when I was lying on my back. This suggests that it should give me about the right level of support for my weight and build. Again though, I always suggest that you test the mattress out for yourself as everyone’s body shape and sleeping position makes a difference.

I then flipped over onto my front and again found that the firmness rating was about right for me. I found it to be quite comfortable and supportive.

However, when I moved on to my side, I found that it was much too firm for me and was putting too much pressure onto my shoulders and onto my hips. If I slept on my side it is fairly likely that I would wake up feeling quite stiff and uncomfortable after a night on this mattress. People who are heavier than me might find that it’s about right for them, if they sleep on their side.

Strength at the edges of the Relyon Derwent Natural Pashmina 2400 Pocket Spring Mattress

I then sat on the edge of the mattress to test out how much strength it had to the edge. On this test, I found that the mattress compressed quite significantly considering that it is a fairly firm mattress. I then lay on the edge of the bed and moved right towards the edge. It didn’t have quite as much strength as I would like at the very edges and I did feel as though there was a risk I might roll off.

Motion transfer on the Relyon Derwent Natural Pashmina 2400 Pocket Spring Mattress

If you can persuade someone to go mattress shopping with you, then I would also suggest you try out a simple motion transfer test.

Start with both of you lying on the mattress and then take turns to get in and out and to wriggle around. The test is to see how much you can feel the person moving around the bed, as it gives an indication of how likely you are to be woken up by someone else’s midnight trip to the toilet.

In this regard, I would say this mattress performed very well considering that it is a sprung mattress, which can be slightly bouncier than a foam mattress. We didn’t pick up much motion transfer when we carried out the test.

Design and specification of the Relyon Derwent Natural Pashmina 2400 Pocket Spring Mattress

Inside the mattress, you’ll find pocket springs, which is what the majority of us have spent our lives sleeping on. These springs work independently and are one of the reasons why you don’t get much of a motion transfer sensation on this mattress.

It also uses quite a few natural fillings such as wool and pashmina. Wool is particularly good at maintaining a consistent temperature when you sleep so you shouldn’t get too hot or cold in summer or winter. These natural materials do tend to bump up the price of a mattress somewhat compared to polyester and other synthetic materials.

The mattress is single sided and has a hand tufted finish.

Let’s talk a little bit about what those two things mean.

I’m something of a traditionalist and quite like a pocket sprung mattress that can be turned over. I haven’t found published research into this but my theory is if a mattress starts to develop a bit of a dip or gets a stain on it then you can turn it over to prolong its life. However, many mattresses now are cleverly designed using a complex arrangement of layers and are deliberately single sided.

The reality, of course, is that most of us don’t get round to turning over our mattress beyond the first few months of owning it.

Meanwhile, the hand tufted finish represents the buttons that you see on the top. These are a traditional way of making a pocket sprung mattress and give it a good amount of strength through its core.

Final thoughts on the Relyon Derwent Natural Pashmina 2400 Pocket Spring Mattress

This is a good quality mattress made in the traditional way using pocket springs and natural materials. I found the firmness level to be right for me but I would encourage you to try it out for yourself. I have found other mattresses with a better strength towards the edge but apart from that I was very impressed.
