Origin is one of the newer mattress brands on the market. It fits into a busy marketplace of bed in a box mattress brands. Those are the mattress brands that will send you a mattress in the post in a squashed-up state. They then expand at home and if you don’t like it, you can return it for a refund. It works well because you can try the mattress for a good length of time rather than a few seconds in a showroom.
We’re always keen to test out new brands and were grateful to be sent the Origin Hybrid Mattress.

Price of the Origin Hybrid Mattress
When we tested out the Origin hybrid mattress it was being sold for £278 in single size, £345 in double size, £415 in king size and £515 in super king size. That puts it is as a considerably cheaper mattress than a lot of bed in a box mattresses.

The Sleep Guy’s Firmness Test on the Origin Hybrid Mattress
Our mattress tests always start by trying to figure out how firm the mattress is. We begin by lying on the mattress on our back and putting our hand underneath our spine.
This gives a good indication of firmness as it measures firmness in relation to your own weight and build. If you struggle to get your hand underneath your back then the mattress is probably too soft for you. If you find that there is a significant gap between your back and the bed, then the mattress is probably too firm for you.
In this case, whilst lying on my back, I found that the mattress was about right for me.
I would put a score on it of about 6.5 out of 10. When rating mattresses we score them one if they are very soft and 10 if they are very firm.
Of course, when you’re deciding for yourself, you need to take into account your sleeping position and your weight. I weigh 13 stone and I’m about 6 ft tall.
If you are heavier than me and sleep on your front or back, then you might need a mattress that is a little firmer.
I then tried out the Origin Hybrid Mattress on my front and again found that it was about right for me.
However, when I lay on my side, I found it to be a little bit too firm for me. That isn’t a criticism of the mattress but just gives you something of indication of whether or not it would be right for you.

Edge tests on the Original Hybrid mattress
Our next test was to lie on our side on the very edge of the mattress. This recreates the scenario of sharing a bed with someone who inadvertently pushes you towards the edge. Some mattresses don’t have much strength at the edge, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this Origin mattress stayed at a consistent firmness right to the edges.
Next up was our custard slice test, which involves sitting on the mattress at the edge. Some mattresses collapse like a custard slice whilst others hold their strength a bit better. I would say this Origin Hybrid mattress was somewhere in the middle on that rating. It’s not a deal-breaker for me, but it’s an indication of what will happen if you try to tie your shoelaces while sat on the bed.

Measuring up
Next we measured the mattress, which in this case was a king size model. This proved a little tricky as the mattress had a ridge of beading all around the edge. If we took this into account then the width was 150cm, as it should be on a king size mattress. The length was 197cm and the depth was 27cm. The specification lists it as 200cm long and 26cm deep. If you don’t include that beading, then you could take another 1.5 cm off the width and length. This did lead to a small gap at the foot of our bed frame.
We tested it three days after it had begun its expansion from opening.

Motion transfer on the Origin Hybrid Mattress
The next test that we always carry out is our motion transfer test. This is an indication of how much you will feel someone else move when they get in or out of the bed.
Some people like to approach this with various devices to see if they will fall over. We prefer a more real world scenario of getting two people to lie next to each other. We take turns to get in and out of the bed and see if we can feel the movement.
We both agreed that the motion transfer on this Origin Hybrid Mattress was very good. We didn’t feel much wobbling around as we got in and out of the bed. I wouldn’t quite put it on a par with a solid foam mattress such as those made by Tempur. However, for a mattress with springs, I think it performed very well.

Handles and construction of the Origin Hybrid Mattress
This is a single-sided mattress so you won’t need to turn it over regularly. However, it should be rotated round to help with its longevity. The handles are fitted vertically and are stitched into the top layer of the mattress. Personally, I prefer handles that are the other way round. I also like a slightly thicker handle but this is not a major issue.
The construction of the mattress uses a mix of springs and foam, hence the hybrid term. This tends to be quite a popular design nowadays for these bed in a box style mattresses. The general idea is that you get the familiar feel of springs whilst also getting some of the comfort and supporting benefits of memory foam.
This mattress certainly has more of a bounce to it than you get with a foam mattress.

Final thoughts on the Origin Hybrid Mattress
I like this Origin Hybrid Mattress and for me personally it was a good firmness level. That won’t necessarily be the case for you, but if you’re a similar weight to me and also sleep on either your front or back, then it’s probably in the right sort of ballpark. Of course, this mattress does come with a free returns policy, which is a real bonus.
I was particularly impressed with the edge support on the mattress. It performed well when I was lying on my side and performed about average whilst I was sat on the edge of the mattress.
The mattress came up a little bit short on our length measurement but I’m not sure if that would be the case on other models or if we were just unlucky. I also had a minor quibble about the handles but to be honest some mattresses don’t even come with handles at all, so I see it as a positive.
