We are big fans of Hypnos mattresses and have owned a couple personally, as well as testing out several others. 

The Hypnos Organics Number 3 mattress jumped out at us, as it has some unusual bells and whistles in its design. These don’t really add a lot to the product itself but it does make it stand out somewhat amongst dozens of other white rectangles competing for your business.

Firmness rating on the Hypnos Organics Number 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress

For me, this mattress scores six or seven out of 10 on the firmness rating, with 10 being firm and one being soft. 

Firmness is a slightly confusing and subjective matter in mattress shopping but there are a couple of tests that you can do yourself. 

The first thing I do with a mattress is to lie on my back and to put my hand underneath my spine. If it’s very hard to get your hand underneath then it’s probably too soft for you, whereas if it’s very easy then it’s probably too firm for you. In this case, it was somewhere in the middle, which confirmed to me what I was feeling – which was that it was not too firm and not too soft for me as someone who sleeps on their front. 

When I rolled onto my side, I would say that it was slightly too soft, but only by a whisker. 

How the design helps with the comfort on the Hypnos Organics Number 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress 

The Hypnos Organics Number 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress uses a top layer, which does tend to give a mattress quite a different feel and can be quite an effective way of combining comfort with support. 

The other side of the story is that it means their mattress will be single-sided and can’t be turned over. That is a very common design nowadays so I wouldn’t let it put you off.

Strength at the edges of the Hypnos Organics Number 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress 

The next key test that we always carry out when looking at a mattress is how it performs when we move around the bed. The best test you can do is to lie and sit right on the edge of the mattress and see how it behaves. 

A good mattress will offer consistent support, even if you are lying on the very edge. I would say that this Hypnos Organics Number 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress performed very well at the edges, considering that it is not a rock solid mattress.

Motion transfer on the Hypnos Organics Number 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress

This mattress also performed very well on what is known as motion transfer, which is how much you will feel someone else moving in the bed. Of course, that’s a very important factor if you are sharing with someone, particularly if they tend to get out of bed before you (or if you are terrified of waking your wife, in my case). 

Test this out for yourself by both lying in the bed and then getting one person to wriggle around, jump up and down and so on. As I said, this mattress performed well in this regard and generally doesn’t suffer from too much wobbliness.

Handles on the Hypnos Organics Number 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress

Finally, we took a very geeky look at the handles on the side of the mattress. Good quality mattresses tend to have very good quality handles that are strong enough to move it around without ripping, at what can be a weak point. This is a bit like looking at the legs on a sofa to give an indication of how well built it is. 

The handles on this mattress are strong but they are also unusual as they have a little leather clasp going around them. I couldn’t really see much practical use to this but it does add a bit of flare and flourish, which I appreciated

Specification of the Hypnos Organics Number 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress

Hypnos is a bit like Vispring, which is another prestigious mattress brand in that they use traditional materials rather than messing around with foam, glue and other synthetic materials with fancy names. 

Hypnos is very good at sustainability and keeping everything natural and recyclable. In this case, the mattress uses organic wool and organic latex. The latter is a particularly expensive material that is good at keeping you cool whilst wool is good at regulating your temperature at different times of years. 

Beneath those layers you will find pocket springs, which is what most of us are used to sleeping on.

Final thoughts on the Hypnos Organics Number 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress

This is clearly a very high quality mattress from Hypnos and the use of organic materials partly explains the high price. 

I would say that you can still get very high quality Hypnos mattresses that cost about a third of the price of this one. There will be some improvements when you get to higher price models but you will get the same Hypnos quality regardless of which model you choose. 

Anyway, we were impressed with the Hypnos Organics Number 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress. When we tested it, it was being offered at £3199 for a double mattress with the king size being offered at the same price as part of a promotion. The single version was £2565 whilst the superking was £4275.
