Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress Review: Is It Worth It?

I get rather excited when I get to test out a mattress that is worth as much as my car. When we tested this Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress it was being sold for £2699 in the single size or £3099 in a small double or double. The king size version was £3349 and the super king was £3699. They also sell two zip and link versions, which is where two mattresses are attached together. We’ll talk a little bit in this guide about motion transfer, which is something that can be helped by going for the zip and link option.

We carried out a few tests on the mattress, which will hopefully be of some help to you. However, we always suggest trying out a mattress for yourself. This particular model is sold by John Lewis, so it is possible to try it out in quite a lot of their stores. You may want to call ahead as we have found at some branches have a bigger range than others.

It’s also worth mentioning that there are lots of considerably cheaper Hypnos mattresses in our top five guide.

Should you spend £3000+ on a mattress?

Firmness rating of the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress

According to Hypnos and John Lewis, the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress is a medium-firm tension mattress. There’s no industry-wide agreement but I would take that to be a mattress that is about a 7/10 with 1/10 being very soft and 10/10 being rock hard.

However, when I did my own assessment I felt that it was more of a 5.5/10. To me, it felt more like a medium tension mattress. It’s unusual for me to disagree with an official description but certainly not unheard of. Again, this emphasises the importance of trying a mattress for yourself!

I reached this conclusion by carrying out a number of simple tests that you can do yourself.

Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3.

Firstly, I hopped onto the bed and lay on my back with my hand underneath my spine to carry out the Spine Test.

In this instance, it was quite an effort to get my hand underneath, whereas a firm mattress makes it very easy to get your hand underneath. The ideal is somewhere in between. This implied that this mattress is a little bit too soft for me and my weight and build. A mattress that I would rate as a 6/10 or 7/10 is about right for me.

I also felt that I sank into the mattress a little bit too much to keep my spine in a natural position.

I then tried the mattress on my front and on my side. On my front, it was a similar situation where I sunk in a little bit more than I would like. However, on my side it was very comfortable and was just right for my weight and build.

It’s important to say at this moment that none of this is a criticism or pejorative comment about the mattress. Each mattress has its own unique feel and you need to find the right one for your own body shape and weight (I am about 6 ft tall and weigh about 13 stone).

Sleeping position is also important. If I were a side sleeper then this mattress would be perfect for me. However, I mostly sleep on my front.

The Edge Test: Does the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress offer consistent firmness from edge to edge?

Lots of cheap mattresses can feel comfortable in the very centre. A test of quality that you can carry out is to lie sideways on the very edges of a mattress. Establishing strength to the corners requires manufacturing techniques such as hand-side -stitching, which are more labour intensive than machine side stitching.

On this Hypnos mattress I found the edge support to be exceptionally good. Whilst lying on the edge I felt tremendously well supported and at no point did I feel that I might slide off the edge of the mattress.

This is truly impressive considering that this is not a rock solid mattress.

I followed up with the Custard Slice test, which involves sitting on the edge of the mattress to put even more pressure on the edge. Again, it performed exceptionally well. Some mattresses react in the same way as when you bite into a custard slice, but this one was more like a slice of rocky road. Apologies, I will stop talking about cake and get back to the thrilling business of mattress reviewing.

The Wibble Wobble test on the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress

This mattress uses pocket springs, which give a mattress a bouncier feel than you would get with a 100% foam mattress. I like a pocket sprung mattress but there is a slight risk of them feeling more wobbly than something like a Tempur mattress.

This can be an issue if you sneak out to work at 5:00 a.m. and try not to wake up your spouse.

There are various ways to test this out, such as balancing items on the bed and seeing how much they move. However, I find a real life test is more useful and also more practical if you are in a mattress shop for yourself. It’s really as simple as two people lying on the bed and taking turns to shuffle around and get in and out. The person lying down can then give feedback as to how much movement they felt.

I call it the Wibble Wobble test, but most people call it a motion transfer test.

I found that the motion transfer rating on this mattress was very good. I didn’t notice much in the way of sideways wobble. It has a higher pocket spring count of 1600 springs, which gives it a pretty dense and solid feel. It also has something called a tufted finish, which pulls it all together and aims to reduce motion transfer.

As mentioned earlier, you can also buy a zip and link version of this mattress. That can be a good way to ensure that you don’t feel each other move as they are effectively two different mattresses joined by a zip. You pay quite a lot more for this option.

The Handle Test on the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress

The handles on the side of this mattress from Hypnos have a very solid feel to them. It is a single-sided mattress so you won’t need to flip it over regularly. However, it does need rotating. I also think that good quality stitching on a set of handles is a good indication of quality throughout.

Final thoughts on the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 3 Pocket Sprung Mattress

This mattress’s biggest strength is the support it offers to the very edges. I was very impressed with the consistent level of support.

Personally, I found it to be softer than I expected, but some ambiguity is inevitable and testing it for yourself is essential. The alternative is to buy online with the option of swapping it if it’s not right for you.

Of course, this is not a cheap mattress and you may consider going for a similar model from Hypnos that will cost you about half as much. My personal opinion is that you are better to go for a cheaper model from a luxurious brand than to go for a high-end model from a cheaper brand. A company such as Hypnos don’t sell poor quality products. This upgraded model does have some advantages such as a higher spring count that will benefit some heavier people, but it is certainly at the pricier end of the Hypnos range.
