Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 2 Pocket Spring Mattress Review: Is It Worth £3000?

John Lewis & Partners sell quite a few different Hypnos mattresses that are exclusives to their stores. We tested out the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 2 Pocket Spring Mattress, which sits somewhere in the middle of the range.

It’s certainly not a cheap mattress. When we tested it, the single version was £2,399 with a small double or double costing £2,799. The king size was £3,049 whilst the super king was £3,399. You could also pay extra to have a king size or super king size zip and link mattress, where two mattresses are zipped together.

We wanted to know if it is worth the money, so carried out our usual series of tests.

How firm is the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 2 Pocket Spring Mattress?

John Lewis describe this mattress as being firm. We found it to be a little softer than we expected and gave it a score of 6/10 for firmness with 1/10 being soft as a blancmange pudding and 10/10 being a lump of concrete.

Of course, there is an element of subjectivity in mattress firmness but that’s my personal opinion.

As always, we began with the Spine Test, which is to figure out what sort of position it leaves your spine in when you are lying on the mattress. This will vary depending on your own weight and build. With my build (which is about 6 ft tall and 13 stone) I found that it was pretty close to leaving my spine in a nice natural sleeping position. It offered me support for my back that I wanted without being too firm, so that I was just lying on top. If I’m being very picky I would say it was just a whisker too soft for me but I would happily live with it.

It was particularly comfortable for me when I lay on my side. This makes sense as people who sleep on their side do tend to want slightly softer mattresses as they get a little bit more pressure on their shoulders and hips than a front or side sleeper.

Most of the time I sleep on my front. In this position, it was marginally too soft for me. That’s not an issue with the mattress but just with my weight and build. If you are ever so slightly lighter than me or if you sleep on your side and weigh about the same as me then I would suggest it might be about right for you.

As always, there’s no substitute for testing it for yourself!

Strength to the edges on the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 2 Pocket Spring Mattress

You would expect a mattress with a price tag like this one to offer consistent strength to the very edges. It didn’t disappoint and I felt very well supported whilst lying on the edge of the mattress on my side. We have found this is the case with most Hypnos mattresses, which are one of the best brands around if you want a traditional style pocket sprung mattress.

It also exceeded our expectations when we sat on the bed. I call this the Custard Slice test as some cheap mattresses give way like that moment when we bite into a custard slice (other sweet treats are available).

The Wibble Wobble Test on the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 2 Pocket Spring Mattress

Most people refer to this test as the motion transfer test, but I prefer to call it the Wibble Wobble test.

Essentially, you are trying to figure out how many times you’ll be woken up by your spouse sneaking out early in the morning.

The very best mattresses are those where an elephant could climb into your bed and you wouldn’t notice. You are less likely to quite achieve this with a sprung mattress than a foam mattress, but this mattress performed very well and we found minimal motion transfer.

The best test that we have found for this is for two people to lie side by side and to take turns to get in and out of the mattress. If this is a concern of yours then you might consider the zip and link option, as these are effectively two mattresses so the risk of sideways movement is much lower.

Does the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 2 Pocket Spring Mattress have good quality handles?

Ah yes, the thrilling question that is on everybody’s lips!

Well perhaps not, but we always look at the handles on a mattress as an indication of how robustly constructed it is.

Mattresses also need to be moved regularly and there is a risk of ripping if you get a heavy mattress with cheap nasty handles.

The Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 2 Pocket Spring Mattress has very strong handles and to my absolute delight also comes with an extra set of handles on the ends. I’ve spent much time dragging mattresses from one room to another and these would have made life a lot easier.

Final thoughts on the Hypnos Luxury Supreme No 2 Pocket Spring Mattress

This is an expensive mattress from a well-established brand with an excellent reputation.

However, I do think it is very high quality and struggled to find anything negative to say about it.

The key is to make sure that the firmness level is right for you. We didn’t find it to be as firm as we expected considering it is given a ‘firm’ label in the shop. Testing it out for yourself is essential in my opinion, although there is an option to return it with some terms and conditions attached.

This mattress is also single-sided. A few years ago I would have said that that was surprising considering the price tag. However, I’ve recently read advice that this is less of an indication of quality than it used to be. I’ve also noticed that many high priced mattresses are designed to be single-sided.

I suspect that mattress manufacturers have realised that very few of us actually remember to flip our mattresses four times a year!
