Positive first impressions of the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Mattress

Over the years, I’ve become very picky about mattress firmness. This is unsurprising as we test out dozens of mattresses in the name of research. I generally find most mattresses are a little too firm or a little too soft for me.

However, I must say that I found very little to criticise about the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Mattress. Before you leap to buy it, I would offer a great big word of caution that firmness ratings are affected a lot by your own weight and build. The position you sleep in is also very important.

Testing out firmness of the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Mattress

I began by testing it out by lying on my back. As always, I slid my hands underneath my back with my palm facing down. This is a simple but effective test. If you find it very easy to place your palm underneath, then the mattress has lifted you up too much and you won’t be properly supported. If you have sunk so far into the mattress that it is hard work to get your hand underneath then the mattress won’t allow you to sleep in a natural position for your spine.

I would say that this mattress felt somewhere in the middle for me. That’s the sweet spot that you are aiming for. You’ll struggle to identify this from just trying one mattress but will get the hang of it after a long (and probably frustrating) afternoon in a mattress showroom.

I then flipped onto my front. This is the position that I sleep in most often and I found the comfort level to be just right for me.

On my side, the mattress was very close to being right for me. I would say it was ever so slightly too firm but it was closer to being right then I expected. Usually, I find I’m comfortable on my side on a softer mattress and comfortable on my front on a firmer mattress.

Overall, I will put this mattress as a 6/10 for firmness. That is with the scale of 1/10 being soft and 10/10 being firm. There is no universally agreed system for firmness but that’s my two pence.

Strength at the edges of the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Mattress

Whilst lying on my side I shuffled over to the very edge of the mattress. In this position I found the level of support stayed consistent. I didn’t feel as though I was going to roll off the mattress. It certainly didn’t sink in significantly more than it had at the edges. This is a very good sign.

It’s particularly good news if you often end up shoved to the edge of a bed by someone else. I have a theory that it also reduces the risk of dips and sags as you don’t end up sleeping in the same position if the firmness is consistent all over.

The second test I did was to sit on the edge of the bed. In this test, I did find that it compressed quite significantly. This is an area where some ‘bed in a box’ style mattresses don’t offer quite as much support as a very robust and premium pocket sprung mattress. However, I don’t think this is a major problem. A bigger factor is how it feels when you are lying down.

Motion transfer on the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Mattress

If you are anything like me, then you are terrified of waking your spouse when you get out of bed. Motion transfer relates to this. A mattress with good motion transfer will not wibble and wobble too much when you get out of bed. One with a lower rating can feel like you are on a boat when someone gets in, particularly if they are a little on the large side.

We felt that the motion transfer rating of this mattress was very good. Layers of foam tend to lessen this motion transfer.

Handles on the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Mattress

I always like to examine the handles on a mattress to see how robust they are. Will they cope with 10 years of being tugged? Are they easy to use?

Personally, I am not a fan of the modern design of rotating handles so that they are vertical. This may just be that I am stuck in my ways, but when I have had to move mattresses (which is quite regularly) I have found it easier to have handles round the other way. In this design, the handle is stitched in at the point where the bottom of the mattress meets the top cover.

It suddenly looks smart but I still think I prefer the old design style.

Construction and design of the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Mattress

This Eve Sleep mattress has a similar design to a lot of modern bed in a box mattresses, with layers of pocket springs towards the bottom and then a mixture of foam and mini springs higher up. It is designed to be used only on one side.

The design differs from some Eve mattresses in that the memory foam layer is near to the top. Some Eve mattresses bury the memory foam lower down and use a more breathable material higher up. Theoretically, this means that this mattress may be a little warmer than some other Eve Sleep mattresses. However, we haven’t done any deep scientific tests on this particular aspect so I would emphasize that this is just a theory.

Final thoughts on the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Mattress

Overall, I was am impressed with this mattress and would strongly consider it to use myself at home (this is a rare event!). The comfort level was very good for me but I would strongly recommend that you try it yourself.

Its strength at the edges and its motion transfer ratings were both very good, in my opinion. Whilst I’m less keen on this handle design, I would say this is quite a minor point.

I think for the price tag this mattress offers a lot. It doesn’t use an abundance of natural materials but it is what I would call a high performer for the money.
