The Just Sleep range of mattresses by Silentnight is their attempt to tap into the popularity of ‘Bed in a Box’ mattresses.
These mattresses shook up the market a few years ago by offering long warranties, home trial periods and trendy one-word names. After all, it’s easier to promote something short and snappy like a Nectar Mattress or a Simba Mattress than a Silentnight Geltex Ultraflex 3000 Mirapocket Mattress.
And so, we have the Just Sleep range from Silentnight, which includes seven mattresses. As far as I can tell, this range is replacing the Studio by Silentnight range.
Some big selling points
Whichever of the seven Just Sleep mattresses you choose, you get a very generous 365 night trial period. You also get a 10 year guarantee.
How does that compare to other mattresses with a trial period.
At first glance, it appears to match the best on the market. Nectar Sleep and Dreamcloud are amongst those offering 365 nights, but most trial periods are 60-200 nights. A full year gives you time to try it in all seasons.
However, the Silentnight 365 night trial period isn’t quite as generous as others as it only allows you to swap your mattress if you don’t like it. If you swap it for a more expensive mattress then you pay the extra (understandably) but if you swap it for a cheaper mattress then you don’t get the difference back.
Some other competitors offer a refund (e.g. Nectar Sleep, Simba Sleep).
The seven mattresses in the Silentnight Just Sleep range.
Let’s get onto the meat in this Silentnight sandwich.
The seven Just Sleep mattresses can be split into three categories to help you make your mind up.
1. The Budget Just Sleep Mattress – Just Relax (£300 for a double mattress)
“Just Relax” sounds like something you would shout at someone who is pointing a weapon at you. It’s also the name of the cheapest mattress in the Silentnight Just Sleep range.
There’s not a great deal to explain with this mattress.
It’s a medium firmness mattress made from layer of foam with a different layer of foam on top. The whole thing is about 18cm deep, which is thinner than I would like (20cm is my minimum).
In fact, it’s very similar in design to the Silentnight 3 Zone mattress which has been around for years and is considerably cheaper (you can get a double for about £200). The 3 Zone model doesn’t come with the 365 night trial period and the warranty is three years rather than 10 years – so the question is whether you want to pay the extra for those bells and whistles.
2. The three mid-priced Silentnight Just Sleep mattresses – Just Breathe (medium/firm), Just Snug (medium/firm) and Just Bliss (medium) – about £500.
The next three mattresses in the Just Sleep range are the mid-priced models. They all use a combination of pocket springs and layers of manmade materials. That’s what mattress people call a ‘hybrid’ mattress, with great excitement.
All three models – Just Breathe, Just Snug and Just Bliss – have 1000 springs. Well, if I’m being pernickety I will point out that they have 1000 springs on the king size version and slightly less on the double version.
My opinion is that 1000 springs is adequate and will give the average person the support they need. Most good quality mattresses have 1000-2000 pocket springs. Heavier people tend to want a higher number than 1000 springs.
They are also all about the same depth at 24-25cm (a good depth in my opinion, as it is deep enough to support you but not so deep that you’ll need to buy extra deep fitted sheets).
So how do these three Just Sleep mattresses differ?
The difference between is the layer between the springs and the outer cover.
- Just Breathe uses ‘breathable fibres’ – go for this one if you don’t like to feel too warm in bed and if you want a medium/firm mattress
- Just Snug uses memory foam – this is your best bet if prefer to feel a little warmer in bed. Memory foam is great for comfort but it does tend to make you feel a bit warmer than other materials.
- Just Bliss uses a foam mixed with gel – I would choose this one if you don’t want to feel too warm and you want a medium firmness mattress.
3. The three most expensive Just Sleep mattresses – Just Calm (medium firmness), Just Dream (medium/soft) and Just Serene (medium/soft) – about £700+
Right, let’s move onto the more expensive models. There are three Just Sleep mattresses that are described as being ‘premium’.
Just Calm and Just Dream are very similar to each other, whilst Just Serene has a more notably different design and is considered the best mattress in the Just Sleep range (well, it’s the most expensive at least).
Just Calm and Just Dream both have the same upgrades from the three mid-priced Just Sleep mattresses. The foam is upgraded to something called ReVo foam. Silentnight claim this is better at keeping you cool. They also have a different outer layer using something called ‘Vitalize’. It’s not entirely clear how this works but Silentnight says that it ‘absorbs body heat and reflects this lost energy back into your body’ and which ‘doesn’t contain any chemicals’.
This layer makes then a couple of centimetres deeper than the mid-priced Just Sleep mattresses.
The only real difference I can see between Just Calm and Just Dream is the firmness level. Just Calm is a medium firmness mattress. Just Dream is soft/medium.
Finally, we have Just Serene.
This is the most expensive Just Sleep mattress of them all. It is similar to Just Calm and Just Dream but has the notable addition of a layer of 1000 mini springs.
Lots of mattresses use a similar design, with the aim of small springs adding to the benefit of the larger springs.
Honestly, most of the work will be done by the large springs, but you will get a modest benefit from adding smaller springs as well.
