We have already tested the Origin Hybrid Mattress and came away impressed with what it offers for the price. And so we were very pleased to take up the opportunity from Origin to try its Hybrid Pro version. It has a slightly beefed up design compared to the standard model, including an extra layer of ‘motion-isolating micro-springs’.

Price of the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

When we tested the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress it was being sold for £475 in single, £564 in small double, £618 in double, £707 in king size and £757 in super king size.

Firmness of the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

We found that the firmness level of the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress was pretty similar to that of the Origin Hybrid Mattress. Overall we gave it a firmness rating of 6.5/10 with one being very soft and 10/10 being rock solid. That puts it somewhere around a medium-firm rating.

We began our firmness test lying on our back and put our hands underneath our spine. This simple test is one that you can do yourself and it works regardless of how heavy or light you are. If a mattress is too firm for you, then you’ll find it very easy to get your hand underneath. If it’s too soft for you then you’ll find it very difficult to get your hand underneath.

Our tester weighs 12 stone and is 5 foot 11 and found that it was about right for them when they were putting their hand underneath. They concluded that it would be about the right firmness for them whilst lying on their side. However, they felt that if they were lying on their back then they would prefer it just ever so slightly firmer. The same applied if they were sleeping on their front. This is certainly not a criticism of the mattress.

The general rule is that people who sleep on their back do need slightly firmer mattresses than those who sleep on their side. This is because the pressure is distributed better if you are on your front or back. Side sleepers get a concentration of pressure around the hips and shoulders so tend to benefit from a slightly softer mattress.

Edge testing and the custard slice test on the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

We then carried out two tests to ascertain how strong the mattress is to its very edges. First, our tester lay on their side at the very edge of the mattress. This is a good test to see if the mattress is strong throughout or just at the middle. In this case, the performance was impressive and it had a firmness level that was consistent across the entire mattress. It felt as though there was a slight ridge around the edge to help create this strength but it had flexibility to it so it wasn’t uncomfortable if you ended up lying on the very edge.

The second edge-related test is what we call the ‘custard slice test’. This is where we sit on the very edge of the bed and see how much it compresses. In this case, the mattress compressed by about a third from its original depth of 29 cm. That’s a decent performance for a mattress that is medium-firm (very firm mattresses tend to compress less).

Handles and construction of the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

Next up, we examined the handles of the mattress. Firstly, we were pleased to see that – yes, indeed – it does have handles, which isn’t always the case on modern mattresses.

Personally, I prefer handles that are horizontal to those that are vertical as I find it easier for movement. The handles in this case are stitched in to the top and bottom layer. They’re made from a slightly thinner fabric than I have seen on some mattresses at the luxury end of the market such as Vispring and Hypnos. However, I am sure they would do the job.

Measuring up the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

Our next test was to see if the mattress lived up to the specification in terms of its width, length and depth. In this case, the width was 135 cm, which is exactly what you would expect from a double mattress. the length was about 1 cm short of the expected 190 cm. The depth was 29 cm against an advertised depth of 31cm.

That’s a good performance, although of course if we’re aiming for perfection then the length should have been slightly longer and it should have been a couple of centimetres deeper.

Motion transfer rating on the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

Motion transfer is one of the most important things to consider when you’re buying a mattress. We like to call it the Wibble Wobble test. Essentially, you are trying to figure out whether your partner will feel you getting in and out of the bed. As you can imagine, this can make a significant difference to how well you both sleep.

A mattress such as this that uses springs and foam will tend to be a little bit bouncier and have a little bit more motion transfer than a solid foam mattress (e.g. Tempur mattresses). However, when we got in and out of the bed and tried to get a feel for movement, we felt that it performed pretty well. I would put the motion transfer rating slightly above average for a pocket sprung mattress.

Final thoughts on the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress is a fair bit cheaper than a lot of the similar bed in box brands that you find heavily advertised on TV – and we were impressed overall.

As well as the tests mentioned above, we also noted that there wasn’t a particularly strong smell, which can be an issue with new mattresses that use a combination of foam and springs.

It performed well on our edge test and Custard Slice Test as well as our Wibble Wobble Test. The firmness rating was about right for us, but it’s worth saying that there isn’t a one size fits all when it comes to mattresses. I would say this mattress would be about right for you if you are around 12 stone and sleep on your side or if you are slightly lighter than that and sleep on your back. It’s hard to offer definitive guidance, but a mattress such as this comes with a good returns policy.

Our only small quibbles were with the handles, which we would prefer to be the other way round and slightly thicker. It was also 1 cm short of where it should have been on length and 2cm short in depth – but that is only a very minor quibble. Other than that, we are impressed with the design for the price tag.
