When we tested out the Sleepeezee Regency Kenilworth 1600 Pocket Sprung Mattress, it was being sold for £999 in the single version with each size upgrade costing you an extra £20. To save you getting the calculator out, I’ll explain that means double is £1199 and a king size is £1399. A super king size is £1599.
Initial impressions of the Sleepeezee Regency Kenilworth 1600 Pocket Sprung Mattress
We are long time admirers of the Sleepeezee brand, which we think often delivers upper quality with mid-range prices (see our main guide). It’s also well established as a company and has some prestige as it has held a Royal Warrant.
The first thing we noticed about this mattress was the rather unusual beige colour. This only affects its trim and handles and will be covered up all the time. But after testing out dozens of mattresses we do tend to get a little excited about these minor things.

Firmness rating of the Sleepeezee Regency Kenilworth 1600 Pocket Sprung Mattress
Sleepeezee describe this as a very firm mattress and I’m inclined to agree. I would give it a firmness rating of 8.5/10 with 1/10 being super soft and 10/10 being the sensation of lying on a kitchen worktop.
The Kenilworth is constructed with a good number of pocket springs, which is what most of us are used to. It gives the bed a pretty bouncy feel. I could imagine my children wanting to do somersaults on this mattress.
As always, I began my testing with what I call the Spine Test. This is where you lie on your back and try to figure out how much of a gap there is between your back and the mattress. If it’s very easy to get your hand underneath then the curve of your spine isn’t quite getting the support that it needs to stay in a natural position all night. If it’s very awkward and a lot of effort to get your hand underneath, then you are sinking in a bit too far.
For me personally, this mattress was too firm and my hand went underneath very easily. We generally need softer mattresses if we sleep on our side than if we sleep on our front or back. I would say that even sleeping on my front or back this mattress would be too firm for me personally.
My general advice would be that this mattress would be more suited to you if you are heavier than I am and also if you sleep on your front or back (I weigh 13 stone and I’m about 6 ft tall).
Needless to say, testing it out for yourself is essential – or at least having the option of a return. It’s very frustrating if you buy a mattress and then have to either put up with it or replace it without getting your money back.
Edge support of the Sleepeezee Regency Kenilworth 1600 Pocket Sprung Mattress
We found that this Sleepeezee mattress gave very consistent and reliable support right to its edges. To be honest, I would be very disappointed if it didn’t as this is a good quality brand and also quite a firm mattress. It tends to be slightly softer and cheaper mattresses that will roll you off the edge. I tested this out by lying on the edge of the mattress on my side and I would advise you to do the same.
I followed this up with what I call the Custard Slice Test, but you might prefer to call it the Cream Slice Test if that’s more to your taste. This essentially involves sitting on the mattress at it very edge and seeing if you slide off whilst trying to tie your shoelaces. Again, it performed exceptionally well in this regard and had very little give.

Motion transfer (or the Wibble Wobble Test) on the Sleepeezee Regency Kenilworth 1600 Pocket Sprung Mattress
I like to refer to this next test as the Wibble Wobble test, but you’re more likely have heard it referred to as the motion transfer test. This aims to give you an indication of how much sideways movement the mattress has when someone gets in or out. It’s worth testing out for yourself when you are in a mattresses shop, ideally with the person you share a bed with getting in or out whilst you lie down.
This is certainly a bouncy mattress so I was concerned that there would be quite significant motion transfer. However, I found the firmness of the mattress counteracted the bounciness of the springs so we didn’t pick up too much sideways movement. My general experience from testing dozens of mattresses is that the mattresses with the lowest motion transfer are generally fairly firm foam mattresses but a firm sprung mattress isn’t too far away.
What about the handles on the Sleepeezee Regency Kenilworth 1600 Pocket Sprung Mattress
Congratulations to those of you who haven’t yet lost interest in this review. I should warn you we’re now going to veer into the least interesting category from most people’s point of view. Yes indeed, I’m going to review the handles on the side of this mattress.
This might seem excruciatingly dull, but I personally think that a high quality handle is a good sign that the rest of the mattress that you can’t see has been well constructed. This Sleepeezee mattress has very strong handles because it needs rotating regularly. It’s worth noting that this mattress is single-sided.
My observation is that double-sided mattresses are becoming less common. I haven’t examined the data on this, but it used to be an indicator of a cheaper mattress, but that doesn’t seem to be the case quite so much nowadays.
I suspect that most of us don’t get around to quarterly flipping of a mattress anyway, so manufacturers are designing them to work well with a single side surface.

Construction and design of the Sleepeezee Regency Kenilworth 1600 Pocket Sprung Mattress
The general design of this mattress is quite straightforward.
It uses pocket springs, and has a significant number of them, which is to be expected on a firm mattress from a decent brand. It doesn’t have complicated layers of mini springs, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Most of the really posh brands keep it quite simple with their designs, whereas mid-priced mattresses often go for the complicated designs and lots of scientific sounding bells and whistles. I must admit to being slightly dubious of such things!
The slightly unusual design of this one is that it includes bamboo within the material because of its antibacterial properties. I have seen bamboo used by some other manufacturers (such as Panda) but it’s not a very common material in mattresses.
Final thoughts on the Sleepeezee Regency Kenilworth 1600 Pocket Sprung Mattress
This mattress certainly lives up to the quality that we would expect from Sleepeezee. Its performance at the edges is excellent and it has other signs of quality such as the excellent and robust handles.
The firmness is much too firm for my needs but it may be suitable for you if you are a little on the heavy side and like to sleep on your front or back
