Eve Sleep is a big name in the mattress market. When they first began, about 10 years ago, they just sold one mattress but they now sell several models including some that are only available at certain retailers. That’s the case with this model that we tried out, which is called the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Plus Mattress.

When we tested it, it was being sold at £350 for a double model. However, this was a special deal, so you may not get it for quite as low a price as that.

Firmness rating of the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Plus Mattress

Let’s start with firmness, which is officially described as ‘soft’ by the manufacturer. As anyone who has done mattress research for more than five minutes will know, there can be quite a difference between two mattresses that are both described as soft.

Personally, I would rate this mattress around a 5/10 for softness with 1/10 being soft and 10/10 being firm. I might be tempted to go down to 4/10.

Lying on my back, I found it too soft for my weight and build. This isn’t a negative comment about the mattress. Each mattress has its own firmness level that works for some people and not others.

I placed my hand underneath my spine and found that it was quite hard to get my hand underneath. This suggests the mattress is a bit soft for me and that I sink in a bit too much for it to be supportive. I flipped onto my front and again found it was a little too soft for me. That’s not to say that I didn’t find it comfortable just that it may not be the ideal mattress for me long term.

However, when I went on to my side I found it to be pretty comfortable for my weight and build. (I weigh about 13 stone and six foot tall).

If you weigh about the same as me and sleep on your side, then this might be the right mattress for you. Alternatively, if you are a little lighter than me (perhaps 10 to 12 stone at a guess) and you sleep on your front or back then it might be about right for you.

Edge firmness on the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Plus Mattress

I sometimes find that bed in a box mattresses such as this one struggle a bit when it comes to offering good quality support right to the very edges. Generally, I have found that high quality pocket sprung mattresses are slightly better at edge support.

However, I was impressed with the level of edge support offered by this Eve mattress. I lay on my side, right on the edge of the mattress and found that the level of support was pretty consistent and similar to the middle of the mattress.

There was, of course, some compression when I sat on the edge but overall I’d rate this as a good performance. You also need to take into account the softness of the mattress. I’ve generally found that firm mattresses are slightly better at maintaining a consistent strength right to the edge. This mattress performed well considering it is quite soft.

Motion transfer on the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Plus Mattress

Motion transfer is something to consider, particularly if you share a bed with someone who is larger than you. Basically, it is the extent to which you feel someone moving about when you are lying in bed. The simplest way to test this is to do a two-person challenge (i.e. one person lies in the bed in their normal sleeping position whilst another gets in or out).

It is hard to knowhow well a hybrid mattress such as this will perform. Generally, foam mattresses have minimal motion transfer. Old fashioned spring mattresses constructed from open coil springs tend to be the worst. Pocket sprung mattresses tend to be less wobby and have less motion transfer than open coil sprung mattresses.

In this instance, we noticed very minimal motion transfer at all and would give it a thumbs up in this category.

Handles on the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Plus Mattress

It may be a little bit nerdy, but I like to take a look at the handles on a mattress. These need to be well constructed, as you are meant to either rotate or flip your mattress regularly.

In the case of the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Plus Mattress, it is a case of rotating it but not flipping it. Personally, I am not a big fan of the handles that come on this mattress.

They are basically the opposite way round to how handles are generally constructed on traditional pocket sprung mattresses. For most people it won’t be a big deal but I personally prefer handles the other way around. These handles are stitched in where the base of the mattress joins the top. Personally, I prefer a separate handle that is attached to the side of the mattress.

I’m aware this is a very small point and I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it (pun intended). However when you have tried as many mattresses as I have you do tend to look for small differences!

Construction and design of the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Plus Mattress

As mentioned earlier, this mattress is single sided, which means that you don’t turn it over but just rotate it round.

The main support is provided by pocket springs but it also has a layer of mini springs and a layer of memory foam. The memory foam layer is buried beneath the mini springs, with more breathable layers of foam higher up. This design is intended to overcome the issue with memory foam that sometimes people feel a bit warm.

This model, which is sold by Bensons For Beds, comes with an eight year warranty. That’s slightly lower than the warranty you get on some Eve mattresses, but you get the added advantage of being able to try it out in a shop.

Final thoughts on the Eve Sleep Hybrid Duo Plus Mattress

We have generally been impressed with Eve mattresses over the years and that is the case with this mattress. The edge support is better than I expected. It also boasts minimal motion transfer considering that it uses springs.

I personally found it too soft for my tastes and my build. However, if you sleep in a different position to me or if you are lighter than me then it may be just about right for you. I’m not a big fan of the design of the handles but this is a very small point and other opinions are welcome!
