Most of the Relyon mattresses that we have tried in the past have taken a fairly simple design but this Ullswater Natural Silk 2900 model is a fair bit more complicated.
Most notably it has a pillowtop layer that contains its own set of mini springs and other materials to give some extra comfort.
Here’s what we thought of it.

Firmness rating for the Relyon Ullswater Natural Silk 2900 Pocket Sprung Mattress
Overall, I’m giving this mattress a rating of 7/10 for firmness with 10/10 being firm and 1/10 being soft.
However, when you have a pillowtop I do sometimes find it quite hard to come up with a figure as they can feel firm underneath but softer on the top. There’s no definitive or scientific measure of firmness that is agreed across the industry, so do try a mattress out for yourself or at least get one with the option of returning it, if it’s not right for you.
Step one in my testing regime is to lie on my back and to put my hand underneath my spine. After you’ve tested out a few mattresses you’ll get a good feel for this and realise that with some mattresses it’s very hard to get your hand underneath whereas with other mattresses it’s very easy.
The ideal mattress for you will be one that is somewhere in the middle, as you are getting the right amount of support. You don’t want to sink into the mattress so that your hand can barely get underneath, but you also don’t want to be lying on top like you would on a plank of wood.
This Relyon mattress was about right for me as a 13 stone man, who is about six foot tall.
The comfort level was also about right on my front and on my back. I usually sleep on my front so this model is about the firmness I would normally look for in a mattress.
Unsurprisingly, then it wasn’t quite right for me when I was lying on my side. Generally, side sleepers need slightly softer mattresses and this one wouldn’t have been quite right for me if I was a side sleeper. You may find it is more suitable for you if you’re a little heavier or a bigger build than me.

Edge firmness of the Relyon Ullswater Natural Silk 2900 Pocket Sprung Mattress
Another crucial test that we also carry out is to see how the mattress feels at the very edges. We did try out a Relyon mattress recently that offered more strength towards the middle than at the edges but that wasn’t really the case with this mattress which had a much more consistent level of support. This is useful for those occasions where you end up sleeping towards the edge of the bed either because you’ve shuffled or because your partner has taken up more of the space.
You can test this out yourself by lying on the edge of a mattress. Also try sitting on it as you’ll get a good impression of how much it compresses.

Motion transfer of the Relyon Ullswater Natural Silk 2900 Pocket Sprung Mattress
Some bouncier sprung mattresses can have a bit of a wobble about them. This is much less of an issue than it was a few years ago when more mattresses used open coiled springs (I can still remember the wobble on my grandad’s spare mattress).
This mattress uses pocket springs and we didn’t notice much motion transfer when we tried our usual test of getting in and out of the bed whilst a second person stayed in the bed and indicated what they could feel.

Handle design of the Relyon Ullswater Natural Silk 2900 Pocket Sprung Mattress
It may seem rather nerdy to be looking at how a handle works on a mattress but I often feel that it gives a good indication of quality. If the handles are strong it usually means that the mattress is robust. In this case, the handles were large and strong and clearly up to the job of moving a solid mattress.

Design and specification of the Relyon Ullswater Natural Silk 2900 Pocket Sprung Mattress
Finally, a few words on the design of this mattress.
I’m a big fan of mattresses that use a softer top layer with firmer springs underneath. It can offer the best of both worlds with good support but also a plushy comfort that makes you feel snug in bed.
This does, of course, mean that the mattress can’t be turned over but I do rather suspect that most people don’t get round to flipping their mattress regularly after initial enthusiasm. Mattresses such as this one weigh a significant amount.
The materials inside include cashmere and silk. This sort of flourish does add a bit of class and bumps up the price tag of a mattress. Honestly, I do wonder if it makes a significant difference when it is in a relatively small quantity but it certainly won’t do any harm.
Overall then, we can’t find much to fault with this mattress. When we tested it, it was £1055 for the double mattress or £1199 for a king size and £1499 for a superking size. The single model was £899.
