When we tested out this Relyon Orthoturn Pocket 1500 mattress it was £949 for a double mattress or £715 for a single mattress. The king size model was £1029 while the superking size was £1229.
Firmness rating for different sleeping positions of the Relyon Orthoturn Pocket 1500 Mattress
When we first climbed on to this Relyon mattress I made a slight noise of exclamation at quite how firm it is.
I would give it a rating of 9/10, with 10 being firm and 1 being soft. In other words, it’s a very firm mattress indeed.
I’m a bit like Craig Revel Horwood in that I very rarely give out a 10 out of 10, just in case something firmer comes along, such as a mattress manufacturer releasing a pocket sprung plank of wood.
I went through my usual tests that I carry out on mattresses starting with lying on my back and putting my hand underneath my spine. This test helps work out how much support you are getting from a mattress and is a good one to do if you are wandering around a mattress showroom on a Saturday afternoon and getting increasingly frustrated.
In this instance I could get my hand underneath the mattress very easily. This tends to imply that it is too firm for you. If it’s very hard to get your hand underneath then it means that you are sinking too much into the mattress.
The old myth that a firm mattress is better for your back doesn’t really apply. In fact, what you need is a supportive mattress that suits your weight and build.
I am 13 stone and about six foot tall but you really need to try out a mattress for yourself or at least get one with a trial period and then have a good guess when you buy it online.
I then flipped over onto my front and again found that it was just too firm for me. I fear that I would just spend a lot of time lying on my front and would wake up feeling quite stiff on a mattress this firm.
Of course, that’s not intended as a criticism of the mattress and it may be just right for you if you are much heavier than I am (and most likelt if you also sleep on your front or back).
The next test I did was on my side, already knowing that it would be far too firm for this sleeping position. Indeed, it was quite uncomfortable lying on my side. I would suggest that for most people that sleep on their side this mattress would just be too firm and will put too much pressure onto the parts of your body that are most easily in contact with the mattress.

Edge firmness of the Relyon Orthoturn Pocket 1500 Mattress
Next up is the test of how much strength the mattress has towards the edges. A good mattress will offer a similar level of support all over, whilst a less good mattress is a bit up and down and has something of a camber to it.
I must say this mattress had excellent strength all the way to the edges. It does tend to be easier to achieve that and more common on a very firm mattress but let’s not be petty about this and give praise where praise is due.
Sitting on the edge of the mattress is another good test of this strength. As you can see from the picture, there is not a lot of give in this mattress when you sit on the edge.

Motion transfer on the Relyon Orthoturn Pocket 1500 Mattress
Next up, we tested how much wobble this Relyon mattress has when one person gets in or out of the bed. This is usually known as motion transfer.
We didn’t notice much motion transfer at all. This is a pretty robust bed that feels like it would come off well if charged at by a rhinoceros, so there was very little wobble.

Handles on the Relyon Orthoturn Pocket 1500 Mattress
We then looked at the quality of the handles on the mattress. You may not conclude that this is the most important thing in the world but it’s a good indication of how high quality the stitching is and whether this has been built to last. The handles are certainly robust on this mattress and looked up to the job of moving it.

Specification and design of the Relyon Orthoturn Pocket 1500 Mattress
Finally, let’s talk a little bit about the design of this mattress, which you can put in the traditional and high quality category of mattress manufacturing.
It’s got 1500 pocket springs, which is a very good number. That is combined with a mixture of natural materials such as cotton and wool along with some synthetic foam. This mattress is not particularly flashy and won’t try to impress you with alpaca, cashmere and other fancy materials.
It’s a double-sided mattress, so you need to turn it over from time to time to help it keep it shape. I would caution that as it’s such a robust mattress this will take some effort. You’ll need to make sure that you are up to the job of turning it over!
