Hypnos Orthocare Classic Mattress Pocket Sprung Review: Awesome British Brand

When we tested the Orthocare Classic mattress from Hypnos it was selling for £879 in the double size. There was a special offer on when we looked at it, so the king size cost the same. Super king was £1179 whilst a single would set you back £699.

As you’ll gather from those prices, this mattress sits towards the cheaper end of the Hypnos range. This is a prestigious mattress brand and some of their mattresses will cost you four or five times as much as the model we tested.

First impressions from trying it out

As I climbed on to test out the Hypnos Orthocare Classic, the first thing I noticed was that this is quite a soft mattress, considering its name. The term ‘ortho’ is generally applied to firm mattresses with the implication being that it is better for your back to have a firm mattress. As anyone that has read this website for more than five minutes will know, that’s a bit of a myth as the right mattress was for your back depends very much on your weight and build.

Anyway back to the review.

Firmness in different sleeping positions

I would rate this mattress around a five or a six for firmness, with 10 being a very firm mattress and one being a very soft mattress. I felt like I sunk in quite a long way but could feel a firm basis further down. I’m 13 stone and I’m about six foot tall, which will hopefully give you some idea when you are making your own mind up.

I carried out the test of putting my hand underneath my back and found there was absolutely no gap and it was quite an effort to get my hand underneath. This confirmed my initial feeling that this is quite a soft mattress and suggested that I had sunk in a bit too much for it to support me adequately.

When I moved on to my side, I found it was a more comfortable and provided a slightly better level of support for my weight and build.

I then moved on to my front, which is how I usually sleep, and concluded that it didn’t really have the right level of support for me as it was a bit too soft.

Edge support

As I set on the edge of the mattress, I would say it gave a modest amount of support. It was pretty good, but there was a significant amount of compression, as you can see from the pictures.

It uses hand side stitching, of course, which you would expect to be used on a Hypnos mattress, but I wouldn’t say it was quite as solid as some mattresses at the edges.

The hand tufted finished felt solid to me and the stitching seemed to be good quality, considering it was a showroom model that sees endless testing and prodding from potential customers.

Motion transfer test

I then rolled around a little to see how much motion transfer and wobble it had. I would put the Hypnos Orthocare Classic in the mid range category for motion transfer. It certainly didn’t wobble a lot but at the same time I have seen other mattresses that have less motion transfer and are less likely to be noticed by your partner whilst lying in bed.

Build quality and design

The handles on the side certainly felt solid and had ample stitching to cope with regular use, although you will only be using them to rotate this mattress as it is single sided.

The design is simple compared to a lot of Hypnos mattresses, with pocket springs supported by a synthetic material called called Solotex and cotton.

Hypnos has a good reputation for sustainability and for using more natural materials than a lot of manufacturers. This mattress is part of the Origins collection so you can expect to find organic cotton.

Final conclusions

For the money, this is a decent mattress from an very decent brand. It’s particularly good value if you can get the king size for a double size price, as was the case when I tested it out.

However, I would recommend trying it out for yourself in person if possible, because it just wasn’t as firm as I was expecting it to be.
